I love having painted nails. It wasn’t always this way though (nail biting habit and then played team sports so had to keep my nails short) but that’s why I love it so much now.
With no restrictions, I now have a vast stock of nail colours (including these summer picks) and I try to have painted nails most of the time (with breaks to restore some health and vitality).
I have, however, never managed to paint my nails without them quickly smudging or chipping. I could paint them in the afternoon, go to bed hours later and still wake up with them covered in sheet squiggles – you know what I mean by those, right?
Knowing my ongoing frustration, for Christmas my mum bought me a SensatioNail Starter Kit. It contains: mini LED lamp, buffer & nail file, cuticle sticks & Red Your Profile express gel polish.
I also have: Gel Base/Top Coat and Primer and the Polish to Gel Transformer.
On the SensatioNail website, they claim that their products create a “high gloss, damage-proof manicure with a stunning mirror-like finish that lasts for up to two weeks” so I put this claim to the test.
Using the Polish to Gel Transformer, I mixed my favourite Chanel colour (461 Blue Satin) and used 2 coats of this along with the SensatioNail base and top coat.
Day 1 – 7.30pm and my nails are done. (definitely forgot to take a photo!)
Day 2 – no sleep squiggles in sight; my nails are so glossy and look great.
Day 3 – no change; looking great still. Day 4 – the polish has chipped on my index finger (left hand) and middle finger (right hand); the polish is also starting to peel up at the base of my middle finger (right hand). Starting to think I didn’t buff that nail enough to get the polish to stick… Day 5 – no change.
Day 6 – starting to notice peeling at the base of a few more nails but not enough that any polish has come off.
Day 7 – my nails grow quickly and the gap between polish and cuticle is starting to be quite noticeable. Also, chipped the middle finger on my right hand. Day 8 – caused a little chip on the middle finger on my left hand when doing some cleaning. Day 9 – broke two nails (not even sure how) so this hasn’t helped with the peeling polish on those fingers.
Day 10 – I hate scruffy nails so I would definitely have performed some repairs and touch-ups by now. Persevering though to day 14…
Day 11 – more chips and a lot of peeling around the bases and tops of my nails; also the growth is screaming out for some infills. Day 12 – can’t bear to look at how bad they’ve got…
Day 13 – is it day 14 yet?
Day 14 – I made it and this is what my nails look like: Beyond repair, so now to find some acetone and foils and get them off as soon as possible!
Ok, let’s review the claim: “high gloss, damage-proof manicure with a stunning mirror-like finish that lasts for up to two weeks“
- high gloss / stunning mirror-like finish – absolutely. My nails are so shiny and the colour looks amazing. This didn’t diminish at all over the 14 days.
- damage-proof – better than regular polish but not perfect. This may be partly my fault though as I think with a bit more practice when it comes to the preparation stages (buffing, primer, etc), I’ll be able to keep them damage-free for longer.
- lasts up to two weeks – up to is the defining factor here. By day 8 or 9, some infills and touch-ups would have been good and they’d have easily still been looking ok by the end of the two weeks. By day 10, they were at the point of needing some major repairs. Between days 11 and 14, I was just glad not to have meetings or be client-facing as I would not have coped with how unprofessional and scruffy my nails looked.
For the purpose of this review, I persevered through 14 days without fixing any chips or doing my infills but I would definitely get this sorted around day 8 or 9.
As far as value for money, this kit is excellent compared to getting gels done professionally. I find gels always chip or peel to some extent and at least this way you can fix them quickly enough yourself at home. Same goes for when infills are needed – zero cost, just do it yourself.
I also love how glossy my nails look and the Polish to Gel Transformer is brilliant – it means that none of my regular polishes will go to waste. The SensatioNail range of colours is amazing as well though – I have Red Your Profile and Mauve It or Lose it but would happily buy a lot more!
