Anyone else suffering from January blues? I’ve been looking at flights everyday to sunnier climes which reminded me that I haven’t done a “Navigating…” post for a while.
Malaga Airport is one I’ve seen change hugely over the years. We’re lucky enough to have a holiday apartment between Marbella and Estepona which I try to visit at least once a year so I’ve flown to and from Malaga numerous times over the past 12+ years.
What used to be a very outdated, small airport has been massively developed and has grown into one with a lot of different amenities. Here’s a few helpful tips and insights into Malaga Airport… Location
Malaga Airport is ideally located for the Costa del Sol, taking just 40 minutes to get to Marbella.
Malaga itself as a city is also lovely, having been here on a day trip with a friend a few years back. Car Hire
As with most airports, there are on-site car rentals and off-site ones. Depending on the time of my flight, I’ve used options from both.
To help you out, these are the companies who have on-site desks: Hertz/Thrifty, Firefly, Goldcar, Record Go, Europcar, Sixt, Avis, Budget (in the arrivals area) and Interrent (the office for this is in the car park).
There’s a large duty free as well as shops for food, designer fashion, electronics and local gifts. There are lots of cafes, a Burger King and a few other food outlets. Mum’s Kitchen is a good one with lots of different dishes and snacks. Just to note – we recently had a late evening flight that was delayed and found that no shops and very few food outlets are open after 10pm.
Check-in / Security
In off-peak season, the queues to get through security into Departures aren’t too bad. During the summer though, it can be crazy so I recommend paying €4 for Fast Lane access – it can be booked online here.
I’ve often found that the security check into Departures is ok but then the passport control line to get from Departures towards your gate can be really busy so make sure you have enough time to get through there once your gate number appears and you’re ready to board.
