Explore Netherlands #4 – GLOW Eindhoven

In its twelfth year, but here for one week only, GLOW Eindhoven lit up the city’s streets on its opening day last Saturday. glow eindhoven, light art festival, blob the bulb, nieuwe emmasingelGLOW is a light art festival featuring around 30 different works from national and international artists, connected by an easy-to-follow walking route through Eindhoven. There are also various side projects and also GLOWNext projects which are collaborations between artists and engineers from hi-tech industries.

The walking route is approximately 6km but it’s a nice, flat (what else would you expect in the Netherlands!) walk with three large GLOW Spots (pop-up food and drink locations) and other kiosks along the way as well. glow eindhoven, glow spot, pop-up, stationsplein, food and drink, food truckIt’s free to experience GLOW but there are options to pay for a group tour and also, for the first time, there is a half-hour light show at the Philips Stadium (tickets: €5,00 in advance, €7,50 on the door). I did the free walking route with some friends and we really loved it.

Each year, the festival takes on a theme with 2017’s being ‘the Source’ – a reference to Eindhoven being a source of light since the foundation of a match factory there in 1870 and the light bulb factory of world-renowned Philips in 1891.

Whilst these photos show some of the displays, they really don’t do the festival justice as it was full of interactive sound and light displays that you really should see in person…
